The circle of fifths is the schematic representation of the well-tempered tonal system. The 12 major keys and their minor parallels are arranged like the 12 hours on the face of a clock. The fundamental notes of neighboring keys have a distance of a fifth from each other, clockwise a fifth upward and counterclockwise a fifth downward.
The AMA circle of fifths also emphasizes important harmonic relationships that can be read off particularly well from this scheme.
The AMA circle of fifths with keyboard fingerings is the central navigation tool in harmony. It makes visible the triads and their harmonic function that belong to the simple major and parallel minor cadence in the selected key and thus form the central chord material of most songs.
