On Créole Renaissance, acclaimed pianist and composer Aruán Ortiz presents a stunning solo piano statement that draws from deep roots in Black experimentalism, Afro-Caribbean poetics, and classical modernism. Released by Intakt Records, this follow-up to his 2016 album Cub(an)ism is both intellectual and visceral—melding influences from Schoenberg and Messiaen to Don Pullen and Bebo Valdés.
Ortiz takes inspiration from the Négritude poets Aimé and Suzanne Césaire and René Ménil, weaving surrealist techniques into sonic narratives that explore Afro-diasporic life, identity, and resistance. Through lyrical abstraction and rich improvisation, Créole Renaissance engages history with urgency, vision, and a uniquely pianistic voice.
