Inspired by Ornette Coleman, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean ventured into the world of the avant-garde on his own in the early 1960s. Nevertheless, he never gave up his fine sense of swing and musical structures. A prime example of this experimental phase is his 1963 album “One Step Beyond”, which received the highest rating of five stars from AllMusic. On this album, McLean and his unique quintet created an unmistakable new sound, which he himself described as “inside-out”.
