Madar stands as one of the most transcendent recordings in the ECM catalogue—a meeting of three master improvisers from different musical worlds that coalesces into pure, borderless expression. Originally recorded in 1992 and released in 1994, the album unites Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek, Tunisian oud virtuoso Anouar Brahem, and Indian tabla maestro Shaukat Hussain under the visionary production of Manfred Eicher.
What emerged from these sessions was a luminous musical dialogue between North Africa, South Asia, and Scandinavia—a sound world at once meditative and exploratory. Sparse yet resonant, the pieces flow with a natural grace, balancing Garbarek’s ethereal saxophone lines with Brahem’s poetic oud phrasing and Hussain’s intricate rhythmic language.
