When Lee Morgan recorded “Taru” in 1968, the trumpeter was at a musical crossroads. This is reflected in the variety of styles he explores on the album: the spectrum ranges from modal jazz and post-bop to beautiful ballads and funky boogaloos. Morgan received additional inspiration at the time from a progressive sextet with George Benson on guitar, among others.
