Jazz at Oberlin was recorded in March 1953 at Oberlin College’s Finney Chapel. It is considered one of the first works of the “cool jazz” movement of jazz, as it departs from bebop and even hints at free jazz piano techniques. It is also considered the work that led Oberlin and other colleges to legitimize jazz as a serious area of musical and intellectual study.
In addition to Dave Brubeck (piano), the album also features Paul Desmond (alto saxophone), Lloyd Davis (drums) and Ron Cotty (bass).
