The album “Jacknife” is one of the overlooked gems in the extensive Blue Note discography of alto saxophonist Jackie McLean. He recorded it in 1965 with a band of young but consistently top-class musicians. As a musical mentor, McLean gave his accompanists – including drummer Jack DeJohnette at his first recording session! – to contribute their own compositions to the repertoire. The album, which was not released by Blue Note until ten years later, was correspondingly fresh and versatile.
