Nat Birchall’s World Without Form Volume 1 marks the first part of his 2012 recording’s long-overdue arrival on vinyl. Originally issued on CD only, the music now spreads across two volumes to preserve the full session, each containing an unreleased piece. This first instalment includes ‘Ithnaan’, an early version of ‘Man From Varanasi’, later revisited on Birchall’s Cosmic Language.
Recorded with a core quintet of Birchall on tenor and soprano saxophones, Adam Fairhall (piano), Nick Blacka (bass), Paul Hession (drums) and Corey Mwamba (vibraphone), the sessions also feature guest appearances from Jon Thorne (bass) and Andy Hay (percussion). Their additions deepen the rhythmic pulse and broaden the group’s tonal palette.
Across Volume 1, Birchall and his ensemble navigate flowing lyricism, spiritual intensity and elegant swing — a vivid display of the group’s chemistry and the exploratory energy that would soon fuel their acclaimed Live in Larissa recordings.
