Often thought of as belonging to the Giovane Scuola Italiana and to operatic verismo, Francesco Cilea sets himself apart with his richly elegant, refined style. Beside his operatic masterpieces we find a quantity of instrumental music of great value, among which the Sonata for cello and piano is outstanding. Composed in 1888, published in 1901 and revised in 1947, this sonata is to be considered a fundamental composition in the Italian chamber music repertoire. Thanks to the careful and philologically accurate work of Giacomo Fossa, this work is once more accessible today to musicians and music lovers in a new edition, which highlights the Sonata’s expressive depths and the elegant writing. This is an invitation to rediscover the most intimate and refined face of a great composer.
